ROAD TRIP
CONTINUING DAY 3:

After our walk around the lake, we headed back to the hostel and got in the car to drive to Haku falls to see the rapids. The river that runs through is the Waikato River which leads to a dam a few miles down stream.

After the rapids, we stopped off at a scenic point to take some pictures before heading to the supermarket to get stuff for another homemade meal of chicken and pasta....yummy! :-)

Walking through the woods to the rapids....

ROAD TRIP
DAY 4:

We decided to get up early to go to The Alpine Crossing, which is over Mount Tongariro - the mountain used for Mordor in Lord of The Rings. We knew that the entire crossing was partly closed off due to low cloud and bad weather, but had the idea to get there early before the weather had a chance to close in.

How wrong we were!! We drove 35miles partly down a narrow gravel road at the bottom of the mountain to the start of the trek. Mrs F had her waterproof trousers in her rucksack which was in the car, but as it wasn't raining, didn't feel the need to put them on.

How wrong she was!! The trek should take a total of 12miles but we only done 2miles due to the fact that visibility was zero and it was fine but heavy mountain misty rain that was soaking us. So we got as far as the lodge that trekers can stay in overnight and regrettably turned around :-(

Once we got back to the car, Mrs F had to take off her soaked treking trousers and put on her waterproof ones....yes we know, she done it the wrong way around, annoyingly!
We stopped off at some hot springs and another scenic point before going back to the hostel for a much needed hot drink, food and then chilled out with a film and popcorn......

A picture of Mount Tongariro on a clear day, which we didn't get to see :-(

The hot springs - see the steam coming up out if the water? It sounded like bubbling, boiling water
